“Promoting meaningful parent involvement in the inclusive education of children with disabilities in the Mid-State region of New York State"
The SUPAC can provide parents of children with disabilities with information, resources, and strategies to:
- promote their meaningful involvement in their children’s education, including information regarding the special education process;
- assist in understanding their children’s disabilities;
- promote early resolution of disputes between parents and school districts;
- promote the use of resolution sessions and special education mediation;
assist in understanding procedural due process rights; and
- enhance parents’ skills and levels of confidence to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with schools and other stakeholders to advocate and actively participate in their children’s education.
The SUPAC will provide these services in a variety of ways:
- provide information and referral services;
- conduct trainings, workshops, and web- and teleconferences;
- prepare and distribute written materials in appropriate languages and formats; and
- create and maintain a website, newsletter, and Listserv for parents.

- Overview of laws and regulations
- Disability-specific workshops
- Working with your school
- Policies, procedures, and referrals
- Transition planning
- Parent advocacy
- And more

The SU Parent Advocacy Center (SUPAC) is the first university-based center in New York State to bring together faculty, students, and staff with members of the local community to provide parents of children with disabilities with information, resources, expertise, and support necessary to promote meaningful involvement in their children’s education.
The SUPAC is funded by a grant from Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) , New York State Department of Education and is a project of the SU Center on Human Policy, Law, and Disability Studies and is located on the Syracuse University campus.
SUPAC covers the following BOCES regions: Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego; Madison-Oneida; Oneida-Herkimer-Madison; Oswego County; Onondaga-Cortland-Madison; Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga; Cayuga-Onondaga and Syracuse City.
